PR9. Levada do Caldeirão Verde

In the north of Madeira lies the beautiful, 100-meter-high Caldeirão Verde waterfall. You can read everything you need to know about this hike is right here for you!

A beautiful levada hike on Madeira: PR9. Levada do Caldeirão Verde

Madeira is known for its levadas, the constructed canals that provide drainage on the island. Because of the various mountains, there is a big difference between the weather in the north of the island compared to the south. Because it rains more in the north, the levadas were constructed to carry the rainwater to the other side.

PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde is one of the many levada hikes known to Madeira. With only +/- 100 meters difference in altitude, it is an easy hike, where you will find yourself among all greenery! The Parque Florestal das Queimadas is characterized by narrow walkways, tropical plants and beautiful views. Therefore, according to many, the PR9 is one of the most beautiful Levada hikes on the island.

That's why I decided to set the alarm at 05:00. It was nice and quiet at the waterfall, I was able to enjoy the sunrise along the way and had the perfect light when I arrived at the waterfall. I could have arrived a bit later, but I didn't know that the sunlight would not catch the waterfall straightaway after rising.

An overview: PR9. Levada do Caldeirão Verde

Total distance: 13 KM (+4,4 KM if you want to visit the Caldeirão do Inferno)

Time: 4-5 hours

Classification: Easy (levada)

Altitude: +/- 100 meters

Good to know

The Caldeirão Verde is located in the Parque Florestal das Queimadas and is close to Santana, the village with the typical houses. A nice 2nd stop after the waterfall. From Funchal it is about a 45-minute drive to Queimadas Parking. The last part of the outward journey is uphill and relatively narrow.

Once you arrive at Queimadas Parking, you can start the route by walking past the other (single) barrier. You will then pass a café where you can have a cup of coffee and a delicious pastry after the walk, after which the signs will show you the way.

Tip: Since you are in the north of the island there is a chance of rain, so don't forget your raincoat and especially your hiking boots for good grip.

What does the PR9 hike look like?

With an almost flat path (only +/- 100 meters difference in altitude), the 6.5 KM hike is very easy. Be aware that during the hike you will have to navigate some narrow paths along the levada. Especially with oncoming traffic it is sometimes difficult to find the best place to move aside. Above all, do not forget to enjoy stunning views, some waterfalls and beautiful plants on your way to the Caldeirão Verde.

Depending on your pace and how busy the route is (especially if you start later in the morning it will be busier), you will complete the 6.5 KM in 1.5 to 2 hours and arrive at one of Madeira's highest waterfalls. The water flows down some 100 meters, quite difficult to capture that on your camera.

If you still have energy left, you can choose to walk 2.2 KM further to the Caldeirão do Inferno.

Flashlight? Check!

You will pass through a total of 4 tunnels on your way to the Caldeirão Verde. Once started you will probably think, "Where are these tunnels?" Once you have had the first one after a few KM, the other tunnels will follow quite quickly. Please note that it does take some bending down to avoid hitting your head. Make sure your phone has a full battery or bring a flash/headlamp.

If you do have your phone with you, don't forget to capture the hike as I did here with the sunrise. Have fun on the PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde hike!
