Porto
The second city of Portugal and the origin of port wine: Porto. Fortunately, the city located on the Rio Douro does not only have various (delicious) types of port to offer.
Explore the historic city center
Highlights in the center include:
- São Bento Train Station with +/- 20,000 painted tiles (azulejos);
- Ponte Dom Luis 1
- A ride in the classic Portuguese metro's (line 22 takes you through the old, historic center)
- Discover the street art & the many azulejos
- Cathedral & Monastery
You'll be hungry after exploring the city, so don't forget to grab yourself a 'Café expresso e Pasteis de nata'; a classic espresso with a delicious Portugese custard cake.
Port tasting
On the other side of the imposing bridge Ponte Dom Luis 1 lies the town of Vila Goia de Nova, the place where port wine officially has its origins. Book a tasting tour in one of the many port houses and discover the history of this Portuguese wine.
A nice day trip from Porto is the Douro Valley: explore the Douro region with its picturesque villages, sail along several impressive vineyards, taste port at a porthouse and enjoy the breathtaking views of the valley.
