Explore the diverse alpine landscape of Tectonic Arena Sardona

The Tectonic Arena Sardona ranges in altitude from approximately 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) to over 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) above sea level, encompassing a vast and diverse alpine landscape. The site's significance lies in its representation of the collision of two tectonic plates, providing valuable insights into the Earth's geological evolution over millions of years.

Getting there

The Tectonic Arena Sardona is located in the eastern part of Switzerland, straddling the borders of the cantons of Glarus, St. Gallen, and Graubünden.

To explore the unique rock formations of tectonic arena sardona, you should go to Alp Nagens. Note that you are not allowed to go there by car, so you’ll have to take a bus or the cable car. I preferred the cable car, which brings you from Flims to Alp Nagens in +/- 20 minutes. The cable car runs from the beginning of June until October. You can check the actual information on the cable car service on the official website of Flims-Laax.

You can park in the parking garage of the shopping mall next to the cable car station. It’s preferred to buy tickets online, so that you don’t have to wait in line at the cable car station.

From Alp Nagens to Tectonic Arena Sardona

After arriving at Alp Nagens, follow the signs for Segneshütte. A +/- 45 minute walk will take you to this hut, from where you’ll be able to get a first glimpse of the stunning surroundings. It’s a moderate hike with a few ascends as well as some stone paved paths. Walking shoes are therefore recommended.

Along the way, you'll pass this colourful lake. You can't swim in it, but I liked the color and the nice backdrop.

Once at the Segneshütte, you can make your way down and follow signs for the Untere Segnesboden to get to an impressive waterfall.

Explore the area

Once you arrive at the Tectonic Arena Sardona, prepare to be awestruck by its geological wonders and captivating landscapes. Take in the mind blowing views of the rock formations of this area and take your camera out to capture some memories.

I had my drone with me and I absolutely loved capturing this amazing scenery. I was there in June, but would have loved to be here in fall to capture the vibrant colors. I’ll leave that one for next time!

Best time to visit

The best time to explore Tectonic Arena Sardona is between June and October, when the cable car is running and the weather is nicely warm. If you go in winter months, you should consider skiing in the area nearby Alp Nagens.

Walking or mountain biking

For walking enthusiasts, there are more than enough walking routes to choose from in this stunning area. I also saw a lot of people taking their mountain bike with them in the cable car, since the route down back to Flims seems to be a pretty scenic mountain bike route.
