Hiking to the Plansee Viewpoint

Published on 1 October 2023 at 18:00

Nestled in the heart of the Tyrol region of Austria, the Plansee is an alpine lake with beautiful waters and stunning natural surroundings. The best way to enjoy the true beauty of this lake? Hiking to the Plansee viewpoint to see this stunning scenery from the top!

One of Tyrol’s largest natural lakes!

The Plansee is situated in Tyrol's picturesque district of Reutte. There’s a refreshing mountain air at an altitude of approximately 976 meters above sea level. The lake covers an expansive area of about 2.87 square kilometers and is one of Tyrol's largest natural lakes. The Plansee is characterized by crystal clear water thanks to the pristine mountain streams and springs that feed into the lake.

The hike

  • Time: 45 – 60 minutes one way
  • Difficulty: Moderate (steep areas)
  • Reward: Endless view of the Plansee!

Starting the hike

From Camping Seespitze, it’s a 15 minute walk to the start of the hike. Cross the bridge, turn left and walk towards the dried-up river stream. Take the first right (see picture) and you’ve arrived at the starting point.

Note that you’re likely to pass multiple dried-up river streams, but you can definitely not miss this big one. Once you start from here, you’ll immediately feel the steepness of the path up.

Good news: the path up is steep, but it’s not too long. In total, you’ll ascend approximately 400 meters. This will take you between 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your pace. The path is straightforward and gives you a few glimpses of the view that’s awaiting at the top.

Enjoy the panoramic view

Once at the top, you’ll be able to enjoy a panoramic view of the Plansee lake as well as the nearby Heintenwanger lake. Get your camera out and capture the stunning scenery, but don’t forget to take in the scenery with your best camera: your own eyes.

What to bring?

In summer, there’s a higher chance of insects, so long pants would be most suitable. When hiking during the summer months, opt for an early start as the temperature will be chillier. Walking shoes for more grip are also recommended, as the path can be a little slippery every now and then. Don’t forget to bring enough water and some food to keep your energy levels high and to enjoy while at the top!

Where to stay?

I stayed at Camping Seespitze, located along the main road next to the Plansee. However, if you’re visiting the Plansee for a daytrip, you can use the (paid) parking lot in front of the camping to park your car and walk to the starting point of the hike.

Good luck!
